Prof. Dr. Sebnem Korur Fincanci, who was charged with insulting the President, due to a social media post she shared during Gezi Protests, said in her defense that “As someone who witnessed what happened there, I had to define the events as massacres “.
Prof. Dr. Fincanci (Chairman of Human Rights Foundation of Turkey) her lawyer Oya Meric Eyuboglu and Erdogan’s lawyer Gökhan Arslanoğlu were present in the third hearing of the trial.
Fincanci reminded that during the period of her tweets, Erdogan was the Prime Minister and after the interventions of the law enforcement agencies towards the protesters, he made statements as “Our police forces had written a heroic saga”, “I gave the order”.
She said “Law enforcement officers targeted citizens directly using pepper gas and plastic bullets. Over 10 thousand people were injured during this process. According to Human Rights Foundation of Turkey data, 13 people lost an eye or vision, 8 people died.”
“The night I tweeted, as a physician, I was on duty at the infirmary in Gezi Park. The police used intense tear chemicals and stayed to find the wounded in the infirmary. In the same day, the prime minister said that he had ordered the intervention. At this moment I felt obliged to define what was done as a massacre, as an eye witness and as a human rights defender.”
“Police violence to reach the level of torture”
“Police violence reached to the level of torture. There are also reports prepared by international human rights organizations. I did not insult public officials, I disclosed the torture. I do not accept the accusation and demand my acquittal.”
The court evaluated the demand of the lawyers for defense and postponed the hearing date to 17 March 2020.
